Creating My First Wiki!
I have never learned about wikis prior to taking the Technology and Instruction class, but I did enjoy creating this wiki (this is my first). I am not very good with technology (the main reason I wanted to take this course was to learn to use it), so it takes me a little longer than probably most of the class to add things to my wiki. As I continue to work on this wiki, I am becoming much more comfortable in my abilities to use technology. I am glad that I am working on one so that when I have a classroom of my own I can incorporate a wiki in my class. I think it is important for children to become familiar with this technology, as they will need to be "technology literate" when they grow-up.
Incorporating Technology into the Classroom
I believe that children should be exposed to technology in the classroom. They should be given vast opportunities to use, and become comfortable using technology. By using the internet for example, students can find limitless information on almost anything that they are researching. They can even communicate with people on the other side of the world, and do virtual tours of historic places. I think that the experiences that students can have using technology in the classroom is empowering. It can make learning relative, fun, and interesting. However, as a safety precaution schools do need to teach students how to use the internet, and all technology responsibly. In addition, if students are not taught how to use technology in school, they may never become comfortable using it. Throughout the Technology and Instruction course, I have become more confident in my technology skills. I feel that this will help me to be a better teacher; the more I know about technology, the more I can I can incorporate it into my classroom, and the more my students will learn about using it.
Learning about Speech Tools
I really enjoyed the Speech Tools presentation that was given in my Technology and Instruction class. I had no idea that students can "talk" or "listen" to Microsoft Word. I will absolutely incorporate this into my classroom. I think that all students can benefit from this, especially students who are learning disabled, as it allows students to work at their own pace. I also love the Microsoft Word Readability Statistics, which enables educators to efficiently differentiate reading material for all students.
Google Docs
I believe that students learn from each other, which is why I am a huge fan of cooperative learning. This is also why I really like Google Docs. I think it is great that students can collaborate with each other instantly through the computer. It not only allows them to do school work, it also teaches them technology, and how to work with others- an important skill needed for everyday life.
